The Kitchen as a Pharmacy
Over time, kitchens seemed to become smaller and less significant. However, today, as people are rediscovering the importance of home-cooked food, kitchens are once again gaining prominence. The tendency to rely on outside food for enjoyment appears to be declining. As a result, the “kitchen pharmacy” is expected to become more well-equipped and convenient.
Every item present in the kitchen has some useful purpose. We often think that spices like cloves, cumin, coriander, chili, turmeric, etc., have special uses—but even simple ingredients like rice and wheat flour also have therapeutic value. For example, flour can be used for making poultices. Overall, every ingredient in the kitchen has some medicinal benefit.
Understanding the properties of these ingredients can help in preparing food that is easier to digest and more balanced. Additionally, for minor ailments, some of these kitchen ingredients can be used for basic home remedies. For this, it is important to have proper knowledge about the qualities of these ingredients.
This book attempts to introduce the various ingredients found in the kitchen and their properties. Every human body is composed of the five elements (Panchabhuta), and therefore, the basic principles of cooking meant to nourish and strengthen the body are almost similar everywhere. In that sense, the “kitchen pharmacy” of one household can be useful to another as well.
Thus, the kitchen plays a vital role in maintaining health and is absolutely essential.
Over time, kitchens had gradually become smaller, but today, with the renewed importance given to home-cooked food, they are expanding again. The growing shift away from outside food suggests that kitchens will once again evolve into well-equipped and health-supporting spaces.
