Samarth Ramdas Rachit Dasbodhatil Guntawnuk Bodh
“First manage worldly affairs properly, then take up spiritual wisdom.”
This is the clear teaching of Samarth Ramdas. Ordinary people should first attend to their worldly responsibilities carefully, and even while doing so, keep in mind the higher purpose of spiritual reflection. In his text Dasbodh, Samarth Ramdas provides precise guidance on what makes life meaningful—a guidance that remains invaluable even today.
At that time, society was terrified and troubled by political and social crises, creating a great need for divine contemplation and spiritual unity. At the same time, people needed to face worldly life with courage and joy, without being overwhelmed by it. To achieve this, Samarth Ramdas advised practical wisdom for everyday life. One key topic he emphasized was investment.
Samarth’s contemporary saint, Tukaram Maharaj, also expressed similar views:
“Jodoniyā dhan uttam vevārē, udās vichārē vec karī”
This means one should earn wealth for worldly life, but while spending it, the focus should not be merely on oneself or one’s family.
The teaching on investment given by Samarth in Dasbodh has been thoughtfully compiled and explained with context by Vinayak Kulkarni in his book “Samarth Ramdas Rachit Dasbodhātīl Guntavanūk Bodh”. This book will serve as a valuable guide for everyone
