Abhigyan Shakuntalam in Marathi
A king follows a deer into a forest hermitage and falls in love. A curse wipes his memory, and a ring brings it back. Abhijnan Shakuntalam is the play that made Kalidas famous across the world, here in a Marathi edition from Varada Prakashan, with the original Sanskrit verses alongside the Marathi . Across seven acts, the play follows Shakuntala, raised by Sage Kanva, and King Dushyanta. They marry by Gandharva rites, Sage Durvasa's curse makes the king forget her, and the lost signet ring leads to their reunion. The fourth act, where Shakuntala says goodbye to the ashram and her forest companions, is traditionally counted among the finest passages in Sanskrit poetry. The story itself comes from an episode in the Mahabharata. With the Sanskrit and Marathi side by side, it suits students of Sanskrit as well as readers who simply want to enjoy Kalidas in their own language. In 1789 it became the first Indian play translated into a Western language, and Goethe wrote verses in its praise. For the play staged as musical theatre, see Annasaheb Kirloskar's Sangit Shakuntal . For a Marathi dramatic adaptation, see Laxmanshastri Lele's Marathi Shakuntal .
