जगातील एक अग्रगण्य चित्रपट-निर्माते म्हणून गणले जाणारे
सत्यजित रे 'आधुनिक बंगालचा सर्वाधिक यशस्वी लेखक' म्हणूनही प्रसिद्ध होते. त्यांनी लिहिलेल्या प्रा. शोंकु यांच्या वैज्ञानिक साहसकथा किंवा फेलुदाच्या चातुर्यकथा जितक्या वाचकप्रिय झाल्या; तेवढीच लोकप्रियता त्यांच्या लघुकथांनाही मिळाली.
'ईटी' आपल्या जीवनात येण्याच्या कित्येक वर्षे आधी रे यांनी परग्रहवासी किंवा 'टाईम मशीन' अथवा मुंग्यांच्या विश्वात रमणारा मुलगा किंवा माणसाला साप बनवणारा, भीतीने गोठवून टाकणारा साधूचा शाप अशा विषयांवर गोष्टी लिहिल्या आहेत. या कथांनी वाचकांना मानवी मनाचे खेळ की अतिंद्रिय शक्तींचा प्रभाव या द्वंद्वात खिळवून ठेवले. साधी सोपी प्रवाही भाषा, अपरिचित विश्व चित्ररूपात डोळ्यासमोर उभे करणारी कथनशैली, सशक्त व्यक्तिरेखा, गूढरम्य कथावस्तू या साऱ्याचे जादुई मिश्रण या कथा सरस बनवते.
यातील काही कथा सत्यजित रे यांनी स्वतः, तर काही त्यांची कन्या आणि प्रसिद्ध भाषांतरकार गोपा मजुमदार यांनी इंग्लिशमधे भाषांतरित केल्या आहेत. यातील निवडक वाचकप्रिय कथांचे मराठी भाषांतर 'खगम्'.
Satyajit Ray, widely regarded as one of the world’s leading filmmakers, was also known as “the most successful writer of modern Bengal.” His science adventure stories of Professor Shonku and the clever detective tales of Feluda became extremely popular among readers; his short stories gained equal appreciation.
Many years before E.T. entered popular imagination, Ray had already written stories about extraterrestrial beings, time machines, a boy who explores the world of ants, or a saint’s curse that can turn a man into a snake and freeze him with fear. These stories keep readers captivated in a constant dilemma—whether what they experience is the play of the human mind or the effect of supernatural powers.
His simple, smooth language, vivid storytelling that brings unfamiliar worlds to life, strong character development, and mysterious themes together create a magical blend that makes his stories exceptional.
Some of these stories were translated into English by Satyajit Ray himself, while others were translated by his daughter and renowned translator Gopa Majumdar. Selected popular stories from these have been translated into Marathi under the title Khagam.
