A forest hermitage, a king out hunting, a ring that slips off a finger, and a love that is forgotten and then found again. Marathi Shakuntal brings Kalidas's Abhijnan Shakuntalam , often called the finest play in Sanskrit, to the Marathi reader as a full dramatic adaptation by Laxmanshastri Lele . The play follows Shakuntala, raised in Sage Kanva's ashram, and King Dushyanta. They marry by Gandharva rites, are separated by a curse, and are reunited through a lost royal ring. The book also carries the famous farewell scene of Act Four, which Sanskrit tradition holds up as the high point of the whole play.
